Blencathra via Sharp Edge
Blencathra via Sharp Edge
1st April @ 08:30 – 12:00
Join us for a breathtaking guided walk up Blencathra via Sharp Edge in the stunning Lake District. This is an exhilarating and challenging route that rewards attendees with absolutely incredible 360 views of the surrounding scenery.
Sharp Edge is a dramatic ridge that rises steeply from Scales Tarn to the summit of Blencathra, originally used by shepherds to access the grazing land on the other side of the mountain. Our knowledgeable guide will share with you the history of the area, point out interesting geological features and wildlife along the way. The route is challenging, with some scrambling required, so a good level of fitness is essential. However, the views from the top are well worth the effort.
As we make our way up Sharp Edge, we will be treated to stunning vistas of the surrounding valleys and hills, with the summit of Blencathra looming ahead. We will pass by impressive rock formations and cross narrow ridges, with the sparkling waters of Scales Tarn far below us. Once we reach the summit of Blencathra, we will enjoy a well-deserved rest and take in the stunning panoramic views of the Lake District. On a clear day, you may even see as far as Southern Scotland!!
This is a challenging and rewarding walk that is not to be missed by any avid hiker or nature enthusiast visiting the Lake District.
Event Type: Scramble
Distance: 5 miles
Difficulty: 3/5 – Good level of fitness required
Duration: Approximately 5 hours including lunch and breaks
Where to Meet
We will be meeting at the The White Horse, Threlkeld car park at 08:00am, aiming to commence the walk at 08:30am.
It is important to note that mobile phone signal can be very limited in the Lake District national park with the other challenge of some roads not actually being listed on Google Maps.
For this reason, we would recommend saving “Cumbria” as a offline map to your mobile device, allowing turn by turn navigation even with no mobile internet. If you are unsure how to do this, please read our blog post here.
We also recommend downloading the what3words app to your mobile phone. This allows navigation to unlisted roads/places using simply a three word phrase.
what3words phrase: ///raven.dwarf.fight
